Kia ora, Ko Wi Manurangi Brown tokuu ingoa, I am a carver based in Hamilton. He uri o nga iwi o Te Aitanga a Māhaki, Ngāti Hauā, me Ngāti Whātua. I have been carving for the past two years, beginning my journey at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. While studying there, I met Pene, who invited me to join his team at Te kohao health. Since then, I have been carving within a collective environment and facilitating carving programmes with our rangatahi, as well as contributing to the Tipu Ake programme, using carving as a way to support learning, confidence, and connection.

“This taiaha is adorned with the surface pattern of Tāratara a Kae, inspired by the kōrero of Kae’s betrayal and the consequences that followed. The Tāratara design represents identity and reminds me that our actions reflect our whakapapa. It also speaks to accountability: every choice carries a path behind it. Finally, it honours the importance of relationships and the responsibility to uphold manaakitanga. This taiaha stands as a reminder to move with "integrity-tanga", protect the trust given to me, and carry myself with mana.”
